What is Involved in the Process?
The dental crown fixing process requires the patient to visit the dentist twice. The steps of the process include:
- Our dentist takes an X-ray of the affected areas to check the support from the nerves and the bones.
- In case of an infection or injury, the dentist will first perform a root canal therapy before proceeding further.
- Based on the damage, the dentist will either fill the tooth gap to make space for the crown or build a tooth to support the crown.
- An impression of the tooth is made to ensure that the crown does not affect your bite.
- This impression is sent to our prosthodontic laboratory to create the crown, and then the prepared tooth is fixed with an acrylic temporary crown for a few weeks.
- Once the permanent crown is ready, the temporary crown is removed and the permanent crown is fixed.
When are Dental Crowns Needed?
Dental crowns are a good solution to deal with the following dental problems:
- To restore chipped or broken tooth.
- To support a damaged tooth that needs excessive filling.
- To protect brittle or weak teeth from further damage.
- To support a dental bridge in case of lack of abutment teeth.
- To replace unappealing and discoloured teeth.
- To hide dental implants.
Types of Dental Crowns
There are many types of dental crowns for you to choose.
- Metal Crowns - Metal crowns are used as they can withstand pressure and impact of chewing. They also last longer compared to other materials. Metal crowns are made out of alloys such as gold, chromium, nickel, and platinum.
- Steel Crowns - These crowns are made out of stainless steel and generally used as a temporary measure to protect permanent teeth until the permanent crown is being prepared in the lab.
- Porcelain Crowns - Porcelain crowns are infused with metal and used when the patient does not want the metal crown to be visible. However, these crowns experience more wear and tear as the porcelain part can sometimes chip off with time.
- Ceramic Crowns - Ceramic crowns are completely made of ceramic. These crowns are used on patients that want a natural look and may be allergic to metals.
