Types of Dental Crowns

Got a worn down or broken tooth? Or you have a disrupted or weak enamel structure? There is one solution that can solve most of your dental imperfection concerns - dental crowns. Dental crowns provide the best protection for the teeth and add up to the strength. These cap-like prosthetics act as a helping hand for restoring the damaged tooth to its original shape, size, or its actual function. Moreover, a dental crown will also be suggested after you undergo root canal treatment. Apart from these, dental crowns offer a lot of other benefits that will help you in regaining a complete dental structure so that you can eat and talk properly.

Dental crowns are available in different types based on the material and colour. Each of these types has different pros and cons. Let us take a look at each one of them in detail.

Ceramic or Porcelain Dental Crowns

Ceramic crowns have a popularity of being used for restoring the front teeth as they possess the ability to blend with the actual colour of the front teeth. This is possible because the appearance of porcelain crowns is custom-made to match that of your natural teeth. They are also a good choice for people with metal allergies. Although they look the natural, they are more brittle than metal or composite and may chip easily.

Porcelain-Fused-To-Metal Crowns

Just like porcelain crowns, these dental crowns can also be custom-made to match the natural appearance of your teeth. However, sometimes the metal under the crown’s porcelain cap shows through as a dark line. Generally the best option available, they are natural and are stronger than porcelain or composite crowns. They won’t chip as easily as porcelain or ceramic crowns.

Metal Crowns

These dental crowns are the strongest of all types of crowns available. Apart from being strong, these crowns are non-brittle and provide a high degree of protection to your teeth. Generally made of cobalt-chromium, nickel-chromium, gold, or silver amalgam alloys, these dental crowns are a good choice for out-of-sight molars. Metal alloys dental crowns are resistant to corrosion and incredibly strong, and hence, they are highly durable.

All-Resin or Composite Crowns

These dental crowns also look natural like porcelain crowns, but won’t chip as easily as porcelain crowns. These dental crowns are less expensive than other crown types. However, they wear down over time and are more prone to fractures than porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns.

Bright and beautiful teeth are an asset, but healthy teeth are imperative. Achieve strong and complete dental structures by opting for the right type of dental crown. You must visit your dental clinic and talk to your dentist about it. The dentist will examine your mouth, understand your lifestyle, and then suggest the right type of crown for you.

Our dentists are also available to be contacted for follow up care. Please note, Emergency Dental Clinics have a wide range of operating hours and availability but we are not a 24/7 service provider. When you experience a true dental emergency, please contact us immediately. If your emergency cannot wait until normal operating hours, please contact your local hospital.

Dental emergencies can occur at any time, such as participating in contact sports like hockey or football. If you’ve suffered a broken tooth or have had a tooth knocked out, it’s important to contact a dentist immediately. If your tooth has been knocked out, try to gently insert it into the socket and hold it there until you reach the dentist’s office. If you are unable to do so, place the tooth in a glass of milk  or water and bring it with you to a dentist or dental clinic as quickly as possible.

By focusing on Emergencies, we provide an extremely high level of emergency service. Helping you in those moments you just need relief! In a lot of cases people tend to let a little tooth ache fester until it becomes a major problem. Why live with something you don’t have to. Our expert Emergency Care Dentists give you relief immediately with the appropriate dental procedures.
